Meta, in a recent blog post, announced the launch of an updated mobile video player for Facebook. This upgrade will introduce a vertical-oriented format, reminiscent of TikTok and Reels, to all video content on the platform. This move has sparked speculation among Facebook users, who question whether the social media giant has copied from TikTok.
With the new design, Reels, Facebook Live, and longform videos will default to a full-screen portrait orientation. This shift in video presentation is set to roll out first on iOS and Android devices in the US and Canada, with a global launch scheduled in the coming months.
Previously, Facebook offered various formats for its video content. Some videos played in horizontal view, while others were integrated directly into the feed. The updated player will automatically adjust to vertical videos but will also provide a full-screen option for most horizontal videos, allowing users to simply rotate their devices for landscape viewing.
Moreover, the aesthetics and functionality of Facebook’s video player are undergoing changes. A slider feature at the bottom of the player will enable users to navigate to different sections of the video easily. Additionally, new controls for pausing and rewinding will enhance the viewing experience.
